What is "Back to School Asthma"?
Every year there our hospitals see a peak in asthma admissions at the time when children are returning to school following summer holidays.
Why does "Back to School Asthma" happen?
No one really knows why this happens but it is probably due to an increase in viruses as a result of large groups of children mixing together after time away.
What can you do to manage "Back to School Asthma"?
Firstly, ensure your child is taking their preventers as prescribed during the summer. It is a good idea to visit your GP in that time and make sure your asthma plan is up to date. Be familiar with your school’s asthma policy including whether your child is allowed to carry their own reliever (which is preferable).
